David Varner, President of Lake Country Satellite & Internet Featured in January’s Virginia Business Magazine

Recently Virginia Business Magazine reached out to us to do an article on our work with Microsoft and the Downtown Boydton WiFi Project. It was an honor to have our company and work featured in such a prestigious business magazine here in Virginia. When Microsoft first reached out to us to work on a project to bring free WiFi to Boydton, and a way for folks to connect that did not currently have a connection, we were thrilled to participate. Here is the link to the article: http://www.virginiabusiness.com/news/article/collaboration-leads-to-2-hour-free-wi-fi-service-in-boydton

Our background has been traditionally in the satellite world selling a product and service as a retailer for Viasat. As an independent retailer you do not have any control over the price or quality of the product you are providing. So we saw this collaboration with Microsoft as an opportunity to not only provide an extremely fast and reliable WiFi Hot Spot, but as an opportunity to provide a high quality, affordable paid service that will pay for the free service long term.

So taking all of the negative and positive comments we have received over the past 18 years, we wanted to build a company and a brand that put the customers first over profit. Our commitment to our customers is to provide a stable and fast platform to deliver fast broadband service in the way customers want, unrestricted, and at a fair price. We looked at everything the competition had to offer and came up with a product that offered greater overall speeds, at a lower cost long term. And the best part, a LOCAL company that is based right here in Boydton, Virginia, right in the heart of Mecklenburg County. Providing a friendly, family owned and operated company for 2 generations.

We did a lot of research and found that LTE , which stands for Long Term Evolution, was the best technology to provide the speed and reliability we wanted to give our customers. Next was to find and purchase our own nationwide frequency to operate on. We found, purchased, and the FCC transferred the NN license to us. Not only do you need the right technology, but you need the right equipment. Again, after an exhaustive amount of time and research, we decided to use equipment from companies that both from what we understand are spin offs or have former ties to Motorola. BaiCells is the manufacturer for our LTE equipment and Cambium is the manufacturer of our indoor WiFi routers and other point to point links. Both manufacturers have a solid reputation and equipment necessary for us to deliver a quality service to our customers.

Currently the service is only available in the downtown Boydton area and outskirts with a visible line of sight to the water tower. We are actively looking to expand our signal beyond the downtown Boydton area to the outskirts where there is no other service available. We are currently looking to expand and are looking for strategic areas to place small micro towers. If you are in the Boydton or surrounding area and are interested in hosting a tower please contact us and we can work something out.

Since we have not received any grant money and are working with our own money, we can only expand as fast as our checkbook allows. More customers relates to more capital for us to expand. We do not want to borrow any money and are relying on our quality service and word of mouth for us to grow and expand to new areas. So if you are in the downtown Boydton area are are tired of paying high cable prices, please give us a call 434-374-8558.
